Liturgy of the Word

Introduce the first reading.

Today’s first reading is from the Old Testament book of the prophet Jeremiah. In this reading Jeremiah is not happy about being God’s servant. He sounds pretty upset with God.  Listen to what Jeremiah prays to God.

A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

Jeremiah 20:7-9 GNT

Jeremiah Complains to the Lord

7 Lord, you have deceived me,

    and I was deceived.

You are stronger than I am,

    and you have overpowered me.

Everyone makes fun of me;

they laugh at me all day long.

8 Whenever I speak, I have to cry out

    and shout, “Violence! Destruction!”

Lord, I am ridiculed and scorned all the time

    because I proclaim your message.

9 But when I say, “I will forget the Lord

and no longer speak in his name,”

then your message is like a fire

    burning deep within me.

I try my best to hold it in,

but can no longer keep it back.

This is the word of the Lord;

All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: What did you hear?  <discuss>  When Jeremiah did what God asked him to do, people made fun of him and treated him badly.  Why do you think that Jeremiah kept on telling people about God?  <discuss>

Say:  Jeremiah remained open to God’s will. Jeremiah loved God.  That love was stronger than anything anyone else could do to hurt him.  It is not always easy to do the right thing that’s why he felt annoyed but we should pray always.

Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:

< My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God..!.…> 3x

Introducing the Gospel

Say: Today’s Gospel reading comes from the New Testament book of Matthew. This reading tells us about a time that Jesus told his disciples how he was going to die. Peter could not understand why Jesus would allow such a horrible thing to happen to Him.  Peter knew that Jesus was God and that He could stop the people from killing Him.  Listen closely and hear what Jesus told Peter.

....with Alleluia!! –

We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!

Chorus:    Halleluiah, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

1.    Eyende mbele, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

 2.   Moto, moto, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah

The leader reading the gospel, silently says: “Cleanse our hearts and our lips almighty God, that we may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.

The Leader starts:

-The Lord be with You,

-And with your Spirit.

A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Glory to You, O Lord

Matthew 16:21-25  (GNT)

Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death

21 From that time on, Jesus began to say plainly to his disciples, “I must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but three days later I will be raised to life.”

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “God forbid it, Lord!” he said. “That must never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned around and said to Peter, “Get away from me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my way, because these thoughts of yours don't come from God, but from human nature.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you want to come with me, you must forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. 25 For if you want to save your own life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake, you will find it.

“The Gospel of the Lord”

Glory and Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

====  7:19 - 7:24 ====

(*) Tell your prepared reflecting story to motivate the children according to the Gospel and theme of the day and children’s level of understanding like in the suggestions below…

Gospel reflection:

Ask: What did Jesus say to Peter?  <Satan, get away from me!> Jesus called Peter Satan!  The man he would choose to lead his church, Jesus called him Satan.  Why do you think he did that?  <Peter was tempting Jesus not to follow God’s will.  Peter was trying to get Jesus to save himself instead of listening to God> Did Jesus really think that Peter was Satan?  <no>  But sometimes even the best people get in the way of God’s will.  People don’t think like God thinks.  And that is Satan’s work.

Memory Verse: Mathew

“Matthew 16:25 “For if you want to save your own life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake, you will find it..”

Let us stand up and we profess our faith.

Profession of our faith

I believe in God the Father, Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

         --bow down--

Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary:

Suffered under Pontius Pilate;

was crucified, died and was buried:

He descended into hell:

The third day he rose again from the dead:

He ascended into heaven,

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

From there He will come to judge the living and the dead:

I believe in the Holy Spirit:

the holy catholic church:

the communion of saints:

The forgiveness of sins:

The resurrection of the body:

And the life everlasting.

Amen.

====  7:24 - 7:26 ====

The Wise Man Built His House,

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the wise man's house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the foolish man's house went "splat!" [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayer go up

So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Liturgy of the Word

Introduce the first reading.

Today’s first reading is from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans. St. Paul reminds us today that all knowledge comes from God. We are simply human and make lots of human mistakes. When we are trying hard to do what God asks, we are supported by all God’s wisdom. God makes us stronger than we think we are.  Let’s hear what St. Paul wrote to the Romans.

A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

Romans 11:33-36 GNT

Praise to God

33 How great are God's riches! How deep are his wisdom and knowledge! Who can explain his decisions? Who can understand his ways? 34 As the scripture says,

“Who knows the mind of the Lord?
Who is able to give him advice?
35 Who has ever given him anything,
so that he had to pay it back?”

36 For all things were created by him, and all things exist through him and for him. To God be the glory forever! Amen.

 This is the word of the Lord;

All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask:  Can anyone tell me this?  In the reading, St. Paul said that anything that came from God does something else.  What was it?  <returned to God>

Say: Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:

< Lord, your love is eternal.!.…> 3x

Introducing the Gospel

Say: Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Matthew. It says; Jesus is walking along with His disciples. Jesus asked them what the people say about Him. Jesus pushed a little further and asked the disciples what they thought He was.  One man answered...  Let’s listen to their conversation and see who answered and what happened next...

....with Alleluia!! –

We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!

Chorus:    Halleluiah, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

1.    Eyende mbele, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

 2.   Moto, moto, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah

The Leader starts:

-The Lord be with You,

-And with your Spirit.

A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Glory to You, O Lord

Matthew 16:13-20 (GNT)

Peter's Declaration about Jesus

13 Jesus went to the territory near the town of Caesarea Philippi, where he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”14 “Some say John the Baptist,” they answered. “Others say Elijah, while others say Jeremiah or some other prophet.”

15 “What about you?” he asked them. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 “Good for you, Simon son of John!” answered Jesus. “For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven. 18 And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

20 Then Jesus ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messier.

“The Gospel of the Lord”

Glory and Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

====  7:19 - 7:24 ====

(*) Tell your prepared reflecting story to motivate the children, but according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the suggestions below…

Gospel reflection:

Ask: Which man gave the right answer to Jesus?  <Peter>  What did Peter answer?  <that Jesus was the Son of God> Then what happened?  <Jesus told him that he was blessed>  Did Peter figure out about Jesus all by himself? No, it was God that reveled it to him

Say:  In the first reading, we heard that “everything comes from God”.  God helped Peter to understand just like God helps us to understand.  Jesus called Peter a “rock” and said that “upon this rock, I will build my church”.  What might this mean?  <discuss>

Say:  Peter was a man of strong faith – just like rocks are strong.  St. Peter was the first pope, the first leader of our church who was chosen by God.  Who is our pope today?

Memory Verse:

“Matthew 16:18” And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church,…..”.

Let us stand up and we profess our faith.
