Liturgy of the Word
Introduce the first reading.
B: In this reading we hear what happened to the Apostles on Pentecost.  They were all gathered again, probably in an upper room.  They were still probably trying to figure out how to get Jesus’ message out to the whole world.  They were probably still a little afraid of the soldiers.  Pretend like we are the Apostles, gathered together here, and see if we can understand what happened to them..

A prepared child/children come and take the reading.
Acts 2:1-11 GNT
The Coming of the Holy Spirit..

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a noise came from heaven. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. This noise filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw something that looked like flames of fire. The flames were separated and stood over each person there. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. The Holy Spirit was giving them the power to speak these languages.

5 There were some religious Jews staying in Jerusalem who were from every country in the world. 6 When they heard this noise, a crowd came together. They were all surprised, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were completely amazed at this. They said, “Look! Aren’t all these men that we hear speaking from Galilee?[a] 8 But each of us hears them in his own language. How is this possible? We are from different places: 9 Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the areas of Libya near Cyrene, Rome 11 (both Jews and those who had become Jews), Crete and Arabia. But we hear these men telling in our own languages about the great things God has done!”
“This is the word of the Lord”
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: What happened to the Apostles?  <let the children share> What did they see?  <tongues of fire upon each of their heads and they spoke in different languages!> But everyone that heard them, could understand them. When we pray to the Holy Spirit to help us do what God wants us to do, we receive the strength and the ability to do it.>
Say: Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth> 3x

John 20:19-23 (GNT)

Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Introduce the first reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is from the New Testament book of the Acts of the Apostles. (Acts 1:8-11) Jesus is talking to the Apostles and telling them to do something.  Then he rose up into heaven.  Listen closely and see if you can hear what Jesus told his friends to do.

A prepared child/children come and take the reading.
Acts 1:8-11 GNT
Jesus ascends into heaven.
8 But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After saying this, He was taken up to heaven as they watched Him, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.
10 They still had their eyes fixed on the sky as He went away, when two men dressed in white suddenly stood beside them 11 and said, “Galileans, why are you standing there looking up at the sky? This Jesus, who was taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way that you saw him go to heaven.”
“This is the word of the Lord”
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: what did Jesus tell his friends to do?  <to go out into the world and tell everyone about Him>Then what happened after Jesus rose up into heaven?  <two men dressed in white appeared and told the Apostles that Jesus would come back in the same way> Do you know when Jesus will come back? <at the end of the world>

Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Liturgy of the Word
Introduce the first reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is again from the Acts of the Apostles. (Acts 9:26-28) It tells about how a man named Saul became a follower of Jesus. Saul was a Roman soldier who followed his orders to chase after and kill the people who followed Jesus.  God spoke to Saul and changed his name.  Does anyone know what his new name was?  <Paul> Listen to the reading and think about how you might feel about the new Christian, Saul.
A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

First Reading is from the book of
Acts 9:26-31 (GNT)
Saul in Jerusalem
26 Saul went to Jerusalem and tried to join the disciples. But they would not believe that he was a disciple, and they were all afraid of him. 27 Then Barnabas came to his help and took him to the apostles. He explained to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had spoken to him. He also told them how boldly Saul had preached in the name of Jesus in Damascus. 28 And so Saul stayed with them and went all over Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He also talked and disputed with the Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to kill him. 30 When the believers found out about this, they took Saul to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.
31 And so it was that the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had a time of peace. Through the help of the Holy Spirit it was strengthened and grew in numbers, as it lived in reverence for the Lord..”
“This is the word of the Lord”
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: How do you think you might feel about Saul?  <afraid, not trust him, etc.>  Barnabas listened to God and believed in Saul.  Barnabas believed even though it didn’t make sense to him…

Let us focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people....>3x

Introduce the Gospel
Say:  Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of John. (John 15:1-5, 7-8). The reading today is a parable. Does anyone remember what a parable is? <a teaching story with a hidden meaning> Jesus compares himself to a vine and us to branches. He reminds us how important it is that we work hard to keep following him..

...with Alleluia!! –
We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!

John 15:1-5, 7-8 (CSB)
Jesus the Real Vine
“I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener. He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit. You have been made clean already by the teaching I have given you. Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can do so only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, then you will ask for anything you wish, and you shall have it. My Father's glory is shown by your bearing much fruit; and in this way you become my disciples..
