Welcome: Today our Theme looks a little like coins – but on them, they have a word TALENT. In biblical times, there were coins, money, that was called TALENT. But we have another meaning for the word “talent”. Can anyone tell me what the word means today?  <a skill, something you know how to do well> so we must make the best use of the talents we have got.

Liturgy of the Word

Introduction of the first reading.

Say:  Today’s first reading is from the first letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians. When St. Paul wrote his letters to the people in the early church, he often wrote about the end of the world.  There is a lot in Scripture about the end of the world.  Does anyone know exactly what will happen at the end of the world? <NO!!!>  We know that Jesus will come back and we know that we will be judged on our behavior......

A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 (GNT)

Be Ready for the Lord's Coming

5 There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. 3 When people say, “Everything is quiet and safe,” then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. 4 But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. 5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober.

Ask: What does St. Paul say about the end of the world?  <it will come quickly, like a thief in the night> He says that we will be surprised.  So what does that mean to us?  <let the children respond>

Introducing the Gospel

Say: Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Matthew. He tells us about a man who has several servants. Can anyone tell me what a servant is?  <somebody who does some work for you>  This man decided to take a trip and he called three servants together and put each of them in charge of something.  Listen to the parable and see what the servants do...…

The Parable of the Three Servants

14 “At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there was a man who was about to leave home on a trip; he called his servants and put them in charge of his property. 15 He gave to each one according to his ability: to one he gave five thousand gold coins, to another he gave two thousand, and to another he gave one thousand. Then he left on his trip.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. 20 The servant who had received five thousand coins came in and handed over the other five thousand. ‘You gave me five thousand coins, sir,’ he said. ‘Look! Here are another five thousand that I have earned.’ 21 ‘Well done, you good and faithful servant!’ said his master. ‘You have been faithful in managing small amounts, so I will put you in charge of large amounts. Come on in and share my happiness!’

Gospel reflection:

Ask:  What happened?  <the servant doubled the man’s money> Why is that good?  <because the servant showed he was trustworthy (by not losing the money) and he showed that he was really working for the man (by increasing his money)>.

Say:  What do you think that God has put you in charge of?  <your skills – things that you can do well with your mind and with your body> What are some of the things that you can do well?  <draw, read, play football and etc> How can you use your talents to make the world a better place?  <let the children respond – some ideas are to draw a picture to cheer someone up, read a story to someone younger, run errands for an older person, etc.>

This reading from the book of Wisdom talks about the qualities of wisdom.  Listen to the reading and see if you can hear something special about Wisdom..... A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

Wisdom 6:12-16 (GNT)

The Value of Wisdom

12 Wisdom shines bright and never grows dim; those who love her and look for her can easily find her. 13 She is quick to make herself known to anyone who desires her. 14 Get up early in the morning to find her, and you will have no problem; you will find her sitting at your door. 15 To fasten your attention on Wisdom is to gain perfect understanding. If you look for her, you will soon find peace of mind, 16 because she will be looking for those who are worthy of her, and she will find you wherever you are. She is kind and will be with you in your every thought.

This is the word of the Lord;

Ask: What did you hear?  <Wisdom shines brightly, easily seen by those who look for her, hurries to meet anyone who looks and think about her. Your worries will disappear; wisdom goes around searching for those who deserve her>

The Parable of the Ten Young Women

25 “At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there were ten young women who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and the other five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any extra oil with them, 4 while the wise ones took containers full of oil for their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was late in coming, so they began to nod and fall asleep.

6 “It was already midnight when the cry rang out, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come and meet him!’ 7 The ten young women woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 Then the foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Let us have some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 ‘No, indeed,’ the wise ones answered, ‘there is not enough for you and for us. Go to the store and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 So the foolish ones went off to buy some oil; and while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived. The five who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed.

11 “Later the others arrived. ‘Sir, sir! Let us in!’ they cried out. 12 ‘Certainly not! I don't know you,’ the bridegroom answered.”

13 And Jesus concluded, “Watch out, then, because you do not know the day or the hour.
