Children’s liturgy – eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) –
2nd August 2015
Colour: Green
Theme: Bread From Heaven          ====  7:00 - 7:03 ====
Entrance Song:
Chorus
I am the bread of life, he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who come to …..
Ask:  Does anyone remember what we leant was last week? (the bread and fish)  And what did it stand for? (to remind us that Jesus will take care of all our needs)
Explain: So we have learned several things about Faith in the last few weeks.  Do you remember any of them?  We have learned not to worry too much, we have learned to trust in God, we have learned that often God uses us to bring Jesus to others and it is our job to help that happen.

Welcome;
Today the Gospel tells us how Jesus tried to explain the difference between the bread we receive that nourishes our bodies and the bread He will provide for us that will nourish our souls.
//V// In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
//R// Amen.
//V// May The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
And the love of God,
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with you all.
//R//  And with Your Spirit.

Liturgy of the Word
First Reading
A prepared child comes to takes the first reading or second reading..
The first reading today is from the second book of Kings. (Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 It tells the story about Moses leading the Israelites in the desert and what happened when they couldn’t find any more food.  Listen closely to see if you have heard this story before.

First reading is from Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15

God feeds the Israelites in the desert by sending them manna and quails.

There in the desert they all complained to Moses and Aaron and said to them, “We wish that the Lord had killed us in Egypt. There we could at least sit down and eat meat and as much other food as we wanted. But you have brought us out into this desert to starve us all to death.”
The Lord said to Moses, “Now I am going to cause food to rain down from the sky for all of you. The people must go out every day and gather enough for that day. In this way I can test them to find out if they will follow my instructions.

 This is the word of the Lord

All say “Thanks be to God”.
Let us focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< The Lord gave them bread from heaven....>
.Welcoming the Gospel

Silently say: ”Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.
The Lord be with You,
AND with your Spirit
Gospel Reading: The Gospel reading is from the book of .. John 6:24-35 We are going to do something that everyone does in the big church, Lord, let your Word be in my mind <make cross on forehead>, on my lips <make cross on lips>, and in my heart <make cross on heart>.

Jesus is the true bread from heaven, offering a life that will never end.

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. or it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'”
Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.                        The Gospel of the Lord”
“Glory and praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ”
(*)Tell an interesting story according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the Gospel reflection:
   ====  7:19 - 7:24 ====
ASK them if they remember the name of the bread that God provided to the Israelites <Manna>.  Remind them that the things that happened to Jesus in the New Testament are often similar to things that happened in the Old Testament. The Jews of Jesus’ time all knew the Old Testament stories, so they were doubly surprised at some of the things that Jesus did.

Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
                  --bow down--
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From there He will come to judge the leaving  and the
dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.

43 But his servant said, “What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?”
He said again, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the Lord: ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’” 44 So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

the Gospel reflection:
==== 7:19 - 7:24 ====
  1. Jesus sees large crowds approaching to hear him teach. And he asks one of his disciples, Philip, where they can get some bread for the people to eat. What does Philip say?
  2. Philip says that it would cost lots of money to feed that many people – two hundred denarii wouldn’t even be enough to give them a little piece each.
  3. Another disciple, Andrew, finds a boy who has some food with him. What does the boy have? Do you think five loaves and two fish is enough to feed a whole crowd of people? Neither did Andrew! But what does Jesus do?
  4. Jesus breaks the bread, gives thanks to God for it and shares it out among the people. He does just the same with the two fish.
  5. The people all share together and eat as much as they need. When they have finished, the disciples go round to collect all the leftovers. Can you remember how much was left?
  6. Jesus made it possible for five loaves and two fish to be shared out amongst 5000 people. And there were still twelve baskets full of food left at the end!
  7. Why do you think Jesus performs this miracle? What was he trying to tell the crowds?

The 1st reading St. Mark tells about the people who had heard Jesus loved him so much that they followed him everywhere. The first reading today is taken from the letter of Jeremiah 23:1-6
Hope for the Future
Jeremiah 23:1-6
23 How terrible will be the Lord's judgment on those rulers who destroy and scatter his people! 2 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says about the rulers who were supposed to take care of his people: “You have not taken care of my people; you have scattered them and driven them away. Now I am going to punish you for the evil you have done. 3 I will gather the rest of my people from the countries where I have scattered them, and I will bring them back to their homeland. They will have many children and increase in number. 4 I will appoint rulers to take care of them. My people will no longer be afraid or terrified, and I will not punish them again.[a] I, the Lord, have spoken.”

5 The Lord says, “The time is coming when I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will rule wisely and do what is right and just throughout the land. 6 When he is king, the people of Judah will be safe, and the people of Israel will live in peace. Feeding the Five Thousand

30 Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.

33 But the multitudes[a] saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.The Gospel of the Lord”

   ====  7:19 - 7:24 ====
Jesus and the disciples decide to go away to a quiet place so that they can be by themselves and rest for a while. They have been working hard and must have been tired.
But what happens?
People see them going and decide that they want to hear what Jesus has to say. So they hurry off to the place the disciples are headed for. They get there first, so when Jesus and the disciples arrive by boat there is already a large crowd waiting for them.

What kind of animal did you hear about?  <sheep>  Why did he say the people were like sheep? <because they followed Jesus around like they did not know what to do, they needed someone to lead them>
