Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) - Sunday 4th October 2015

This resource is based on the Gospel reading for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B). It concentrates on the latter verses, Mark 10:13-16, as the earlier verses deal with divorce, a difficult subject to address with children in such a short space of time.

***Note *** And the readings talk about families and the importance of children in families.  Be very sensitive to the fact that there are many types of family structures and the care and love of the children is the most important issue.  The children need to be affirmed and feel secure.***

Colour: Green
Theme: A Gift and a picture of a heart/s, representing a Family.
          ====  7:00 - 7:03 ====
Entrance Song:

Give me joy in my heart, I pray
give me joy in my heart
keep me praising….
keep me praising till the break of day.
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
sing hosanna to the King of kings.
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
sing hosanna to the King.
Welcome;
Today we are going to hear how special and important children were to Jesus. Today is also the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment. Let us take a few moments to be still and to pray.
Explain:Today is the Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time.
Ask:  Does anyone remember what our symbol was for last Sunday? ( a gift)  And what did it mean?  <it stood for the individual gifts that God gives each of us, our talents and our possessions>
Explain: God gives each of us many gifts.  What does He expect us to do with them? <SHARE>
Today’s readings are about one of the gifts that God gives each of us.  Our theme today represents that gift..  What gifts did God give you?   You are looking for the answer “family”>
Ask:  What is a family?  <typical answers are - mother, father, brother, sister, etc.>  What other kinds of families are there?  <give the children a chance to offer their particular family structure - and AFFIRM it>  The main thing that makes family is LOVE and commitment to one another, particularly to loving children.

//V// In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
//R// Amen.
//V// May The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
And the love of God,
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with you all.
//R//  And with Your Spirit.

Penitential Rite
Dear little children, let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
Confession of our sins
I confess to the Almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words
in what I have done and In what I have failed to do
-strike the breast 3 times as you say-
through my fault
through my fault
through my most grievous fault
THEREFORE I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin
all the Angels and Saints
and you, my brothers and sisters
to pray for me to the Lord our God

Have Mercy on us oh Lord
For we have sinned against you.

Show us, Oh Lord, your mercy
And grant us your salvation.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.
Lord have Mercy
Lord have Mercy

You came to sinners
Christ have mercy
Christ have mercy

You are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

May the almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting?
AMEN

Liturgy of the Word
First Reading, Introduce the reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is from the Old Testament, the book of Genesis. (Genesis 2:18-24) This is the story of how God created the first family.  Does anyone remember the names of the first family?  <Adam & Eve>  Let’s listen to the reading and think about what we need to learn about families.
A prepared child comes and takes the first reading or second reading.

The first reading today is taken from the letter of Genesis 2:18-24 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

The First Woman.

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him.”
19 From the ground God formed every wild animal and every bird in the sky. He brought them to the man so the man could name them. Whatever the man called each living thing, that became its name. 20 The man gave names to all the tame animals, to the birds in the sky and to all the wild animals. But Adam[a] did not find a helper that was right for him.21 So the Lord God caused the man to sleep very deeply. While the man was asleep, God took one of the ribs from the man’s body. Then God closed the man’s skin at the place where he took the rib. 22 The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman. Then the Lord brought the woman to the man.
23 And the man said,
“Now, this is someone whose bones came from my bones.
Her body came from my body.
I will call her ‘woman,’3because she was taken out of man.”
24 So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife. And the two people will become one body.

This is the word of the Lord
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Let us focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives...>3x.

Introduce the Gospel
Say:  Today, Mark tells about a time when Jesus was teaching.  Some parents tried to come to Him with their children so that He could bless them.  Jesus’ friends tried to keep them from interrupting Him.  Listen closely to hear what Jesus did and said. Welcoming the Gospel
..with Alleluia!! - OR
Welcome the Gospel through a song.
Chorus:
Halleluiah, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.
1.    Eyende mbele, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.
2.   Moto, moto, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah
Silently say: ”Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.
The Lord be with You,
AND with your Spirit.

The Gospel Reading was written by Mark 10:13-16 (full reading Mark 10:2-16) International Children’s Bible (ICB)
Let Lord’s Word be in my mind <make a cross on forehead>, and on my lips <make a cross on lips>, and in my heart <make a cross on the left side of the chest>         OR
Glory to You Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus Accepts Children

13 Some people brought their small children to Jesus so he could touch them. But his followers told the people to stop bringing their children to him. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was displeased. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them. The kingdom of God belongs to people who are like these little children. 15 I tell you the truth. You must accept the kingdom of God as a little child accepts things, or you will never enter it.” 16 Then Jesus took the children in his arms. He put his hands on them and blessed them.
The Gospel of the Lord”
“Glory and praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ”
  ====  7:19 - 7:24 ====
(*)Tell an interesting story according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the
Gospel reflection:
Ask What do you remember from that reading?
People were bringing their children to Jesus for His blessing but the disciples tried to stop them. Why do you think that the disciples did this?
What did Jesus say to the disciples?
Jesus tells the disciples to let the children come to him and that the kingdom of God belongs to children like these. He says that children have a special way of looking at the world and understanding things, which adults can learn from.
How does it make you feel to know that Jesus thinks all children are important and that he wanted to listen to them?
Jesus welcomed and blessed the children that came to see him. He loves us all. No matter where in the world that we live.
Let us stand up to profess our faith.
Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
                  --bow down--
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From there He will come to judge the leaving  and the
dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
