Children’s Liturgy

Third Sunday of Easter (Year A) April 30th, 2017
Preparing the worship space.
-      Colour: White
-      Theme: Bread. Jesus took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.

Welcome: Today we hear how two of the disciples went on a journey to a village called Emmaus. Along the way, they met someone really special, although they didn’t recognise him at first. Who do you think it was? Let’s find out if you are right…

Ask: What was last week’s theme? <Doubting Thomas.”> Thomas needed proof that Jesus had risen – and Jesus loved him anyway, He showed him His wounds
God loves us the way we are;

Penitential Rite
Dear little children, let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
Confession of our sins
I confess to the Almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words
in what I have done and In what I have failed to do
-strike the breast 3 times as you say-
through my fault
through my fault
through my most grievous fault
THEREFORE I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin
all the Angels and Saints
and you, my brothers and sisters
to pray for me to the Lord our God…
Have Mercy on us oh Lord
For we have sinned against you.
Show us, Oh Lord, your mercy
And grant us your salvation.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.
Lord have Mercy
Lord have Mercy

You came to sinners
Christ have mercy
Christ have mercy

You are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
May the almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting?
AMEN

Liturgy of the Word
Introduce the first reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is from the New Testament book of Acts of the Apostles. In this reading, Peter talks to the people of Jerusalem. Pay attention and listen to what Peter said.
A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

Acts 2:14, 22-24 (NRSVACE)
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.
22 ‘You that are Israelites,[a] listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth,[b] a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through Him among you, as you yourselves know— 23 this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law.

This is the word of the Lord”

All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: What did Peter say?  <that Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan>  Jesus is stronger than death.  Did the people do a bad thing by killing Jesus?  <yes>  But what Peter is telling them is that they can be forgiven, that Jesus lives again and that he loves everyone no matter what!
Say: Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:
I love you, Lord, my strength.>3x

Introduce the Gospel
Say:  This reading tells us about two of Jesus’ friends traveling on a road to a small town that was called Emmaus.  They were talking to each other about everything that had happened.  A stranger joins them and asks them to tell him what they are talking about… Listen well
...with Alleluia!! –
We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!
Alle-lu Alle-lu, Alle-lu Alle-lluia!!
Lets praise the Lord….
Alle-lu Alle-lu Alle-lu Alle-lluia!!,
Lets praise the Lord….
Alle-luia, Lets Praise the Lord!
Alle-luia, Lets Praise the Lord!
Alle..lluia Lets praise the Lord….!!!

The leader reading the gospel, silently says: Cleanse our hearts and our lips almighty God, that we may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.

The Leader starts: The Lord be with You,
And with your Spirit.
A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John.
Glory to You, O Lord
Luke 24:13-35 (NRSVACE)
The Walk to Emmaus
13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ 19 He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’ 25 Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
The Gospel of the Lord”
“Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ”

(*) Tell your prepared reflecting story to motivate the children, but according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the suggestions below…

Gospel reflection:

Ask: What one special new thing did you hear?  <let the children respond>  Who was the stranger who joined the two friends?  <Jesus>  Did they know who he was?  <no>

Explain:  Why do you think that they didn’t recognize Jesus at first?  <let the children respond> First of all, they saw Jesus die.  Even if he looked exactly the same, they KNEW he was dead – so their minds would not believe it was Jesus.

Memory Verse: Luke 24:30-31 “…,he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.  Then their eyes were opened, ...

Let us stand up and we profess our faith.

Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
         --bow down--
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
