Explain: Today is the 33^rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the last Sunday in Ordinary Time.  Next Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King which is the very last Sunday of the Church Year C. After that, we begin a new liturgical year. The Church year begins with Advent, the season before Christmas.  

Ask: Does anyone remember the symbol for last week?  <Faith=Heaven> < We talked about heaven, the eternal life that God has promised his people.> We talked about heaven, the eternal life that God has promised his people.

Today Jesus warns us that life will be difficult and the world will face wars and disasters but that we mustn't lose hope. We must trust in God who will guide us and save us.

¹⁹ For the day is coming, blazing like an oven,
    when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble, And the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch,
    says the Lord of hosts.
²⁰ But for you who fear my name, the sun of justice
    will arise with healing in its wings;^[a]
And you will go out leaping like calves from the stall

Introduce the Gospel

Today’s Gospel reading is all about the end of the world, too.  It comes from the book of Luke.  (Lk 21:5-19). When Jesus would teach about the end of the world, people became nervous.  They wanted to know when it was going to happen. Wouldn’t you want to know too?  If you knew, you would be particularly nice to everyone so that you could be sure that you would go straight to heaven.  Jesus tells us about a lot of things that will have to happen first.  Listen closely and see if you can hear some of the things that will happen first.

^5 [a]While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, he said,⁶ “All that you see here—the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

The Signs of the End. ⁷ Then they asked him, “Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?” ⁸ He answered, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’^[b] Do not follow them! ⁹ When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.” ¹⁰ Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. ¹¹ There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.

Ask: Did you hear Jesus said some of the things that will happen before the world will end?  <wars, earthquakes, people starving, terrible diseases, people will be hurt for believing in God>  Can you think of places in the world today where there are wars, earthquakes and people are hungry for food?

Say:  But Jesus says not to worry. He says to keep believing in Him and keep living the best life you can.  That’s what God asks of us.

Explain:  This is a story about some heroes who promised to believe in God and follow his laws. They knew that they would go to heaven.  They were willing to suffer because they believed in God’s promise to them. Now listen soundly…

Martyrdom of a Mother and Her Seven Sons.

¹ It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king to force them to eat pork in violation of God’s law.a 2 One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: “What do you expect to learn by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.” 9With his last breath he said: “You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up^* to live again forever, because we are dying for his laws.”^c

10After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put forth his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely stretched out his hands,11as he spoke these noble words: “It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disregard them; from him I hope to receive them again.”

12Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man’s spirit, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.

13After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way.14When he was near death, he said, “It is my choice to die at the hands of mortals with the hope that God will restore me to life; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life.”

Introduce the Gospel

Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Luke.  (Lk 20:27-38) When Jesus taught people, they had lots of questions. There was one group of Jews called Sadducees who did not believe in eternal life. They believed that when a person died, that was the end. There was nothing else.  Let’s listen to this story that St. Luke shares with us some of the questions that the Sadducees asked Jesus.

The Question about Rising from Death

²⁷ Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, ²⁸ “Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: ‘If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.’ ²⁹ Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children. ³⁰ Then the second one married the woman, ³¹ and then the third. The same thing happened to all seven—they died without having children. ³² Last of all, the woman died. ³³ Now, on the day when the dead rise to l ife, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her.”

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “The men and women of this age marry, ³⁵ but the men and women who are worthy to rise from death and live in the age to come will not then marry. ³⁶ They will be like angels and cannot die. They are the children of God, because they have risen from death. ³⁷ And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ ³⁸ He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive.”

In today's story a group of religious leaders who were from rich families did not believe in resurrection - that people would be raised from the dead to be with God after they had died.

The religious leaders in today's story loved to obey rules. So they asked Jesus a question to trap him, to catch him out. They asked him about who a woman would be married to in heaven, if she had been married seven times in her life.

But Jesus says that in heaven everything is different from on earth.

Lastly: Jesus is showing us that our rules only go so far and that his kingdom is bigger than this world. If we believe in Jesus we see things differently, we see people differently and we act differently.
