Have Mercy on us oh Lord
For we have sinned against you.

And grant us your salvation.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.

Liturgy of the Word
First Reading, Introduce the reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is from the second book of Maccabees. (2 Macc 7:1-2, 9-14)

Explain:  This is a story about some heroes who promised to believe in God and follow his laws. They knew that they would go to heaven.  They were willing to suffer because they believed in God’s promise to them. Now listen soundly…

A prepared child/children come and take\ the first reading or second reading.

The first reading is from the old book of (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14)

Martyrdom of a Mother and Her Seven Sons.

It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king to force them to eat pork in violation of God’s law.a 2 One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: “What do you expect to learn by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.” 9With his last breath he said: “You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up* to live again forever, because we are dying for his laws.”c

10After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put forth his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely stretched out his hands,11as he spoke these noble words: “It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disregard them; from him I hope to receive them again.”

12Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man’s spirit, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.
13After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way.14When he was near death, he said, “It is my choice to die at the hands of mortals with the hope that God will restore me to life; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life.”
“This is the word of the Lord”
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: What do you think of the story?  <discuss> ** note to facilitator: The most important feature here is the strength of the faith of these martyrs**  They believed so strongly in eternal life that they were willing to die.

Let us focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full....….>3x.

Introduce the Gospel

Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Luke.  (Lk 20:27-38) When Jesus taught people, they had lots of questions. There was one group of Jews called Sadducees who did not believe in eternal life. They believed that when a person died, that was the end. There was nothing else.  Let’s listen to this story that St. Luke shares with us some of the questions that the Sadducees asked Jesus.

Let us Welcome the Gospel
..with Alleluia!! – OR

Welcome the Gospel through a song.
Chorus:
Halle, halle, halle-lu-jah!
Halle, halle, halle-lu-jah! Halle, halle, halle-lu-jah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!!!
Silently say: ”Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.

The Leader starts: The Lord be with You,
AND with your Spirit.

A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke

Glory to You, O Lord

Luke 20:27-38(GNT)

The Question about Rising from Death

27 Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, 28 “Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: ‘If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.’ 29 Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children. 30 Then the second one married the woman, 31 and then the third. The same thing happened to all seven—they died without having children. 32 Last of all, the woman died. 33 Now, on the day when the dead rise to l ife, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her.”
34 Jesus answered them, “The men and women of this age marry, 35 but the men and women who are worthy to rise from death and live in the age to come will not then marry. 36 They will be like angels and cannot die. They are the children of God, because they have risen from death. 37 And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive.”

The Gospel of the Lord”

“Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ”
  ====  7:19 - 7:24 ====
(*)Tell an interesting story according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the
Gospel reflection:
In today's story a group of religious leaders who were from rich families did not believe in resurrection - that people would be raised from the dead to be with God after they had died.

The religious leaders in today's story loved to obey rules. So they asked Jesus a question to trap him, to catch him out. They asked him about who a woman would be married to in heaven, if she had been married seven times in her life.

But Jesus says that in heaven everything is different from on earth.

Lastly: Jesus is showing us that our rules only go so far and that his kingdom is bigger than this world. If we believe in Jesus we see things differently, we see people differently and we act differently.

Memory Verse:
“Luke 20:38 ( “He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to Him all are alive.”)

Let us stand up and we profess our faith.

Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
                  --bow down--
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From there He will come to judge the living and the
dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
