begins the season of Ordinary Time. What is the liturgical color we usually use in
Ordinary Time? <green> This segment of Ordinary Time is very short—just a
few weeks. Then we will begin the season of Lent.

Welcome; Today we hear how something
special happened to Jesus after his baptism. The Holy Spirit came down and
rested on Him. We are going to think about the Holy Spirit and how it can help us to do what is right.

the Word
First Reading, Introduce the reading.
Say: Today’s first reading is from the Old Testament book of Isaiah 49:3,5-6 Isaiah
told us all about Jesus many years before he was actually born. Listen to
exactly what Isaiah says and see if you can figure out who “Israel” is.

I will give you as a light to the nations,

not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on
whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the

Gospel reflection:
John tells us how in his vision, he saw the Holy Spirit come
like a dove to rest on Jesus. When it happened, John believed that Jesus was
the Son of God.
A dove is one way that the Spirit shows
itself, but most of the time the Spirit is invisible. The Trinity appeared at
Jesus’ baptism, and that Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit> What does that mean? <that
Jesus brings a new meaning and strength to Baptism>.
