Liturgy of the Word

First Reading
A prepared child comes to take the first reading or second reading

Deuteronomy 8:2-3
Good News Translation (GNT)

Remember how the Lord your God led you on this long journey through the desert these past forty years, sending hardships to test you, so that he might know what you intended to do and whether you would obey his commands.
He made you go hungry, and then he gave you manna to eat, food that you and your ancestors had never eaten before. He did this to teach you that you must not depend on bread alone to sustain you, but on everything that the Lord says.
This is the word of the Lord
All say “Thanks be to God”.

After the reading, the child says “This is the word of the Lord
All say “Thanks be to God”.

Welcoming the Gospel
You are welcome Lord of Lords,
You are welcome King of Kings
You are welcome Lord of Hosts
You are welcome Prince of Peace..
You are welcome here, Alle-lluia,
Alle..lluia Might God!!!

Silently say: ”Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.

The Lord be with You,
AND with your Spirit

Gospel Reading: A reading from ...

Gospel: John 6:51-58
Good News Translation (GNT)
As you put a cross, say “May the Gospel be on my mind, on my lips and in my heart

John 6:51-58
Good News Translation (GNT)
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If you eat this bread, you will live forever. The bread that I will give you is my flesh, which I give so that the world may live.”
52 This started an angry argument among them. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
53 Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in yourselves. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day. 55 For my flesh is the real food; my blood is the real drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. 57 The living Father sent me, and because of him I live also. In the same way whoever eats me will live because of me.58 This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”

And at the end, say “The Gospel of the Lord” and all repeat “Glory to you Lord, Jesus Christ

Tell an interesting story according to the Gospel.

Gospel reflection
John 6:51:58
Today Jesus tells us that he is the living bread which has come down from heaven. That anyone who eats this bread will live forever.

He goes on to say that the bread he gives is his flesh, and that whoever eats his flesh and drinks his blood lives in him and he lives in them.

What do you think this means?

Every time we come to Mass, the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Jesus. And we come to share in it, even if we only have a blessing, welcoming Jesus into our lives.

With older children, who have made their First Holy Communion, you could talk more about the significance of the Eucharist at this point. For younger ones, we have chosen to focus more on the importance of bread around the world.

Why do you think Jesus chose to talk about bread?

Bread is a very important food. It is a basic food eaten by people all over the world. It is an everyday food that all his listeners would have recognised and understood.

When was the last time you had some bread? How often do you eat bread? Every day, once a week or just on special occasions?

How many different types of bread can you name? (eg brown, white, baguette, pitta, naan, chapati, rolls etc). How many different types of bread have you tried?

Bread is very important in the lives of many people around the world today. In fact it can be life-changing.

Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
--bow down--
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, dead and buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful

Now is the time to pray for our stuff :-PWe live in Jesus and he lives in us and so we pray together:
1
We pray for all those whose life stories are in the bread that we eat, those who produce the ingredients, those who make the bread: that they may have their fair share of the good things that God has given for us all. Lord, hear us,..
2
We pray for all members of our global family who are hungry: that through our prayers and actions, we may all have enough food. Lord, hear us,..

We pray for our parish, family and friends: that we may be inspired to work together with others so all people may have enough to eat. Lord, hear us,..

Silently, everyone give your petitions to God.
Closing prayer: Lord, Giver of Life, we thank you for the gifts that you have given us. Watch over all your people and work through us so that all your children around the world may have enough to eat. Amen.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God, for ever and ever.
Amen

Gospel: John 3:16-18 Good News Translation (GNT)
As you put a cross, say “May the Gospel be on my mind, on my lips and in my heart

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
The Gospel of the Lord,
Thanks to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Gospel reflection: What do you remember from today’s reading?
Today we hear that God loved the world so much that he sent his only Son, Jesus, into the world to show us how to live and so that we might have eternal life.

God loves the world and all the people, plants, animals and everything else in it very, very much. And God wants us to love the world too.

We are called to show our love for the world and for all the people who live in it, for all the birds, flowers, trees and animals, for everything that God has created.
