First Sunday of Advent (Year B)

3rd December, 2023

Year B is a year of Sacraments

Preparing the worship space.

Colour: Purple

Theme: A Heart.

 ====  7:00 - 7:03 ====

Welcome: Today is the First Sunday of Advent – a special time when we get ready for the coming of Jesus. Jesus asks us all to keep watch for Him so that we will be ready when He comes. Today we shall notice the change in colour, which one do you think it is? Purple.

And Today’s theme <hold up the theme> is a heart. What does a heart make you think of? <LOVE!> Our hearts are in the center of our bodies. We have to have hearts to live. We talk about our hearts like they hold important emotions (like love).  We want the love of Jesus in our hearts.

 ==== 7:00 - 7:03 ===

And I’m so happy, so very happy
I’ve got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart.
And I’m so happy, so very happy

Penitential Rite

Dear little children, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Confession of our sins

I confess to the Almighty God,

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned

in my thoughts and in my words

in what I have done and In what I have failed to do

          -strike the breast 3 times as you say-

through my fault

through my fault

through my most grievous fault

THEREFORE I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin

all the Angels and Saints

and you, my brothers and sisters

to pray for me to the Lord our God…

Oh Lord Have Mercy

Have Mercy on us oh Lord

For we have sinned against you.

Show us, Oh Lord, your mercy

And grant us your salvation.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.

Lord have Mercy

Lord have Mercy

You came to sinners

Christ have mercy

Christ have mercy

You are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us.

Lord have mercy.3

Lord have mercy.

May the almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting?  AMEN.

Liturgy of the Word

Introduction of the first reading.

Say:  Today’s first reading is from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthian people. In this reading, St Paul talks about how grateful he is that Jesus came to earth to be with us. Pretend that you are a child who lived in the city of Corinth.......

A prepared child/children come and take the reading. It’s the 2nd reading.

1 Corinthians 1:3-9 (GNT)

3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Blessings in Christ

4 I always give thanks to my God for you because of the grace he has given you through Christ Jesus. 5 For in union with Christ you have become rich in all things, including all speech and all knowledge. 6 The message about Christ has become so firmly established in you 7 that you have not failed to receive a single blessing, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be faultless on the Day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is to be trusted, the God who called you to have fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord.

This is the word of the Lord;

All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask: What did you hear? Discuss. God will take care of us until Jesus returns to earth.

Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:

< Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you.…> 3x

Introducing the Gospel

Say: Today’s Gospel reading comes from the New Testament book of Mark. In this reading, Jesus is talking to his disciples.  He compares his coming back to earth with another situation.  He compares it to a man leaving his house and putting his servants in charge who also doesn’t tell them when he is coming back.  Listen to Jesus’ words as if you were one of his disciples.  What do you think Jesus is trying to tell the disciples?

...with Alleluia!! –

We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!

Welcoming the Gospel;

You are welcome Lord of Lords,

You are welcome King of Kings

You are welcome Lord of Hosts

You are welcome Prince of Peace..

You are welcome here, Alle-lluia,

Alle..lluia Might God!!!

The leader reading the gospel, silently says:Cleanse our hearts and our lips almighty God, that we may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel”.

The Leader starts:

-The Lord be with You,

-And with your Spirit.

A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Glory to You, O Lord

Mark 13:33-37 (GNT)

33 Be on watch, be alert, for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It will be like a man who goes away from home on a trip and leaves his servants in charge, after giving to each one his own work to do and after telling the doorkeeper to keep watch. 35 Watch, then, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming—it might be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or at sunrise. 36 If he comes suddenly, he must not find you asleep. 37 What I say to you, then, I say to all: Watch!”

“The Gospel of the Lord”

All say “Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ”.

====  7:19 - 7:24 ====

(*) Tell your prepared reflecting story to motivate the children, but according to the Gospel and at children’s level of understanding like in the suggestions below…

Gospel reflection:

Ask:  What was Jesus trying to tell his disciples? – to be ready for His return- What can we do to get ready for Jesus to be in our lives?  <be good to people, obey parents, do homework, pray more etc.>  These are things that we want to try to do during Advent.  We want to try to be closer to God by being the best people we know how to be.

Memory Verse:

“Matthew 13:36 “…. <“If he comes suddenly, he must not find you asleep..”>...”x3

Let us stand up and we profess our faith.

Profession of our faith

I believe in God the Father, Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

         --bow down--

Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary:

Suffered under Pontius Pilate;

was crucified, died and was buried:

He descended into hell:

The third day he rose again from the dead:

He ascended into heaven,

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

From there He will come to judge the living and the dead:

I believe in the Holy Spirit:

the holy catholic church:

the communion of saints:

The forgiveness of sins:

The resurrection of the body:

And the life everlasting.

Amen.

====  7:24 - 7:26 ====

Prayers of the Faithful . Now is the time to pray for our stuff :-) Intercessions.

You may want to ask the children to offer their own prayers or you can use the suggestions here.

We pray together for God’s help to use our talents wisely:

Leader: God asks us to be ready for when Jesus comes again. Together let us ask for God’s help …

Prayer 1. We pray for all people who are poor, sick, sad or frightened and the wounded in wars, especially the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Russia, and the Ukraine conflict, that they may be comforted by God’s love and find hope for a better future... We pray to the Lord...

Prayer 2. We pray for our families and friends, that we may always keep our eyes open to the world around us and reach out to all those who need our help… We pray to the Lord....

Prayer 3. We pray for our parish community: that we may follow the example of Jesus and be ready to welcome Him when He comes... We pray to the Lord...

 Prayer 4. Living God, help us to listen to your word, to be kind and generous and helpful to others and to be ready to welcome Jesus when He comes... We pray to the Lord...

====  7:26 - 7:28 ====

Silently, each one tells God their petition.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen

====  7:28 - 7:30 ====
