Children’s Liturgy

St. Mbaaga Tuzinde Catholic Church Kiwatule

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
Sunday 17th June 2018
Preparing the worship space
Colour: Green
Theme: A mustard Tree

Welcome: Today we hear about a tiny little seed. But when it is planted it grows into a big bush with branches big enough for all the birds to come and sit in. Let’s think a bit more about what Jesus was trying to say with this story.

Ask: What was last week’s theme? <Corpus Christi.” > The Feast of Christ’s Body and Blood. Corpus Christi is Latin for Body of Christ..

Bring forth the Kingdom of mercy,
Bring forth the Kingdom of peace;
Bring forth the Kingdom of justice,
Bring forth the City of God!

You are a light on the hill, O people:
Light for the City of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people:
Shine for the Kingdom of God!

Penitential Rite
Dear little children, let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
Confession of our sins
I confess to the Almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words
in what I have done and In what I have failed to do
-strike the breast 3 times as you say-
through my fault
through my fault
through my most grievous fault
THEREFORE I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin
all the Angels and Saints
and you, my brothers and sisters
to pray for me to the Lord our God…
Have Mercy on us oh Lord
For we have sinned against you.
Show us, Oh Lord, your mercy
And grant us your salvation.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.
Lord have Mercy
Lord have Mercy

You came to sinners
Christ have mercy
Christ have mercy

You are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

May the almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting?
AMEN

Liturgy of the Word
Introduce the first reading.
The first reading today is from the Old Testament book of the prophet Ezekiel.  (Ez 17:22 –24).  Ezekiel was a prophet who told the people at the time he lived (AND US!) about God.  Let’s pretend that we are listening to the prophet Ezekiel and see if we can understand what he is telling us.
A prepared child/children come and take the reading.

Ezekiel 17:22-24 (GNT)
God's Promise of Hope

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“I will take the top of a tall cedar
    and break off a tender sprout;
I will plant it on a high mountain,
23     on Israel's highest mountain.
It will grow branches and bear seed
    and become a magnificent cedar.
Birds of every kind will live there
and find shelter in its shade.
24 All the trees in the land will know
    that I am the Lord.
I cut down the tall trees
and make small trees grow tall.
I wither up the green trees
and make the dry trees become green.
I, the Lord, have spoken. I will do what I have said I would do.”

This is the word of the Lord”

All say “Thanks be to God”.

Ask:  What did the reading from Ezekiel tell us about God?  <that God is so powerful that he can make trees grow big and tall or break them down, that God has the power to do anything>
Say: Let us now focus on our responsorial Psalm:
< Lord, it is good to give thanks to you!> x3

Introducing the Gospel

Say: Today’s Gospel reading comes from the New Testament book of St. Mark. (Mark 4: 30-34) Its about a little tiny seed.  Let’s pretend that we are people listening to Jesus and see what he tells us about the seed.  Make sure you listen to the very beginning of this reading to hear the first question that Jesus was answering.

...with Alleluia!! –
We sing while standing and welcome the gospel!!

Yelele yelele Halleluiah. [G]

Chorus:   Halleluiah, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

1.   Eyende mbele, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

2.   Moto, moto, Halleluiah x3 Yelele yelele Halleluiah.

The leader reading the gospel, silently says: Cleanse our hearts and our lips almighty God, that we may worthily proclaim your Holy Gospel.
The Leader starts: The Lord be with You,
And with your Spirit.
A reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
Glory to You, O Lord

Mark 4: 30-34 (GNT)
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

The Use of Parables
33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
The Gospel of the Lord”
“Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ”
====  7:19 - 7:24 ====

(*) Tell your prepared reflecting story to motivate the children, but according to the Gospel and children’s level of understanding like in the suggestions below…

Gospel reflection:
Does anyone remember the very first question in the beginning?  It is what Jesus compared the seed to.  <What is God’s kingdom like?> Jesus said that God’s kingdom was LIKE WHAT happens when the mustard seed is planted.  What did happen?  <it grew larger than any other plant>   So God’s kingdom is like when you take something very small and it grows very big.  Maybe it is like what happens when you do something nice for someone.. And then they do something nic e… and then...what happens next?  <everyone feels happy and loved!>

Memory Verse: John 6:56
31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”;.”
Let us stand up and we profess our faith.

Profession of our faith
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
         --bow down--
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
was crucified, died and was buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead:
I believe in the Holy Spirit:
the holy catholic church:
the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.
Amen.

====  7:24 - 7:26 ====
