Birth of a very important person, John the Baptist. Does anyone remember who
John the Baptist was? <Jesus’ cousin> he preached just before Jesus did.
Ask: What was last week’s theme? < “The Mustard Tree.” > “a mustard tiny little seed. but when it is planted it grows
into a big bush with branches big enough for all the birds to come and sit in..”.

Liturgy of the Word
Introduce the first reading.
Today’s first reading is from the Old
Testament, from the book of Jeremiah the prophet. (Jer 1:4-8) This reading tells us about when God called
Jeremiah and what Jeremiah’s response was.
A prepared child/children come and take the reading.
Jeremiah 1:4-8 (RSVCE)
Jeremiah’s Call and Commission
4 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to
speak, for I am only a youth.”[a] 7 But the Lord said to me,
“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you you shall go,
and whatever I command you you shall speak.
8 Be not afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
says
the Lord.”

Ask: What did Jeremiah say when
God called him? <that he was too
young > What did God say then? <that
he knew all about Jeremiah and that He had chosen him to be God’s messenger>
Explain: God knows everything that we worry
about. When He asks us to do something,
He already knows how it will all turn out.
He wants us to trust Him.

Introducing
the Gospel
Say: Today’s Gospel reading
is taken from the book of Luke (Lk 1:5-17)
It is the story of John’s father, Zechariah. Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were very old
and had never had children before John.
Can you remember another couple from the Old Testament that were very
old when they had a son? <lead the children to guess Abraham &
Sarah if you can>...with Alleluia!! –
We sing while standing and

Parable of the Mustard Seed
5 [a]In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named
Zechari′ah,[b] of the division of Abi′jah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her
name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all
the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child,
because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.
8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on
duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to
enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of
the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared
to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 And Zechari′ah was troubled when
he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be
afraid, Zechari′ah, for your prayer
is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his
name John.
14 And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth;
15 for he will be great before the Lord,
and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink,
and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,
even from his mother’s womb.
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli′jah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient
to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

would be? <to be a prophet like Isaiah and prepare people for the coming of Jesus>
